On mailboxes…

…and their resemblance to deer.   Often when I’m driving at night along the 5 miles of squiggly roads between Highway 10 and my house, the eery figure of the mailbox presents problems.  The similarity of a mailbox to a deer may not seem immediately apparent to many people.  Allow me to lay before you the various features shared by the two.  1) Legs   2) small reflective white areas    3) proximity to the edge of the road.   There is one particular place where a few mailboxes together, painted beige, sit on the far side of a curve in the road.  Nearly every time I come around that curve at night I see those “legs” at the edge of the road, and with freshly trained southern-driving instinct, a foot moves toward the brake pedal. Thankfully the wayward foot realizes its mistake in time and thus we avoid the loss of control.  Feeling sheepish, I drive on.
